The blue mussel occurs naturally in the Belgian North Sea. That is also the species of mussel that Sea Farm Westdiep will cultivate. These mussels are soft, tasty and require less cleaning than other mussels. Moreover, they contain little fat and a lot of protein. An excellent alternative to meat!

Because of the waves and strong currents in the Belgian North Sea, it is not easy to cultivate mussels. A lot of research and innovation went into the realisation of the sea farm. Thanks to modern modelling techniques, we have adapted the design of the supporting longline systems. This makes them more resistant to the natural forces of the sea.

Did you know that …

  • 10,000 Colruyt Group customers have tasted the Belgian mussels at the 10 Colruyt, OKay and BIO-planet seaside stores?
  • Belgian mussels do not need to be cleaned? When applying longline cultivation, the mussels hang in the water and hardly get any contact with the sandy seabed.
  • When cultivating mussels in the open sea, no nutrients are added to the water? This is called extractive aquaculture: the mussels feed on the nutrient-rich seawater.
  • Mussel seed is naturally present in the North Sea? With innovative techniques and a solid supporting structure of longlines, we give these mussels the chance to grow into delicious, high-quality seafood.
  • Do mussels filter sea water? They take CO2 from the air via the water and store it in their shells.
