In the summer of 2023, fresh market Cru launched the sale of the first Belgian mussels from Zeeboerderij Westdiep. A first! The target volume of 10 tonnes of mussels from the first harvest will undoubtedly increase in the coming years.

What is typical about Belgian mussels?

Mussels are an excellent source of protein: They contain little fat, a lot of protein and have a low carbon footprint. At Sea Farm Westdiep, we grow the blue mussel, a species that occurs naturally in the the Belgian North Sea. The mussels are meatier, have a salty taste and require less cleaning than other mussels.

What are the challenges facing mussel farming in the Belgian North Sea?

Because of the waves and strong currents in the Belgian North Sea, it is not easy to cultivate mussels. Therefore, a lot of research and innovation preceded the realisation of the sea farm. Modern modelling techniques allowed us to make the design of the supporting longline systems more resistant to the natural forces of the sea.

Did you know that …

  • Belgian mussels do not need to be cleaned? When applying longline cultivation, the mussels hang in the water and hardly get any contact with the sandy seabed?
  • no nutrients are added to the water when cultivating mussels in the open sea? This is called extractive aquaculture: the mussels feed on the nutrient-rich seawater.
  • mussel seed is naturally present in the North Sea? With innovative techniques and a solid supporting structure of longlines, we give these mussels the chance to grow into delicious, high-quality seafood.
  • mussels filter the seawater? They extract CO2 from the air via the water and store it in their shells.
